When a loved one faces serious medical challenges, managing their care at home can feel overwhelming. For adults with chronic illnesses or complex health needs, hospital stays and nursing facilities aren’t the only option. Private duty nursing offers a skilled, compassionate solution—bringing expert clinical care directly into the home, where patients feel most comfortable.
Access Home Care provides licensed, one-on-one private duty nursing across Pennsylvania, allowing medically fragile adults to remain in familiar surroundings while receiving continuous, high-quality care.
What Is Private Duty Nursing?
Private duty nursing is a specialized service provided by Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) to individuals who require continuous skilled medical care at home. Unlike standard home health visits, private duty nurses stay with the patient for extended periods—ranging from a few hours to 24/7—based on their unique medical needs.
This type of care supports adults who may be ventilator-dependent, have tracheostomies, require enteral feeding, or need close monitoring for complex medical conditions. It’s ideal for those who need long-term assistance with clinical tasks that go beyond what typical caregivers or aides can provide.
Who Can Benefit?
Private duty nursing is best suited for adults with serious or chronic conditions that require ongoing attention. This may include:
- Individuals with ALS, MS, Parkinson’s disease, or muscular dystrophy
- Patients with spinal cord injuries or other mobility-limiting conditions
- Adults requiring tracheostomy or ventilator support
- Those who are technology-dependent for life-sustaining functions
- Individuals who are recovering from major surgeries or medical events and need extended care at home
These individuals often require skilled oversight to manage symptoms, prevent complications, and avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Private duty nursing enables them to receive the care they need in a way that supports dignity, autonomy, and quality of life.
Skilled Nursing in the Comfort of Home
Access Home Care’s private duty nursing program brings advanced clinical care into the home environment. All care is provided by licensed professionals who are trained in complex medical procedures and chronic disease management.
Nursing services may include:
- Tracheostomy and ventilator management
- Tube feeding (enteral nutrition) and IV therapies
- Wound care and dressing changes
- Medication administration and monitoring
- Seizure observation and management
- Vital sign monitoring and documentation for care teams
Every care plan is developed in collaboration with the client’s healthcare provider and supervised by a Registered Nurse. The goal is to ensure seamless continuity of care while offering clients the comfort of staying at home.
Flexible Scheduling and Personalized Support
Private duty nursing through Access Home Care is built around each individual’s needs. Shifts can be customized to include as little as four hours per day or as much as 24-hour coverage, including overnight or weekend care. This flexibility allows families to schedule care around work, personal responsibilities, or other support services.
Because each client is matched with nurses based on clinical expertise and compatibility, care feels more personal and less institutional. And with consistent nursing oversight, families can feel confident that their loved one is receiving safe, competent care—even in medically complex situations.
Supporting Families and Enhancing Quality of Life
Caring for an adult with complex medical needs is emotionally and physically demanding. Private duty nursing provides much-needed relief for spouses, adult children, and other caregivers. It ensures that care is delivered by qualified professionals, which not only improves outcomes but also reduces caregiver burnout.
Having skilled nursing at home also supports independence and minimizes unnecessary hospitalizations. Clients maintain routines, enjoy their own space, and stay connected to the people and places they love—all while receiving attentive, one-on-one care.

“My desire to enter into nursing started when one of my older sisters died of kidney disease due to lack of care. At age 15, I decided to enter into nursing so that I could provide quality care to patients.Upon arrival in United States at 21 years of age, I enrolled in T.C Willliams School of Practical Nursing while working as a nursing assistant at a nursing home. I also worked as a part-time home health aide to take of the elderly. After completion of my practical nurse education, I worked in geriatric psychiatry unit at Dominion Hospital and Arlington Correctional facility mental health unit.
I completed Marymount University in 2001 and entered into Home Care as a field case manager.
I held that position for 2 years and as an Administrator, and for another 2 years until Access Home Care was found in 2004."
