No matter what part of the country you live in, December is right around the corner, and that means cooler temperatures are on their way. While in some of the naturally warmer parts of the country welcome this change in temperatures, many parts of the country are getting ready for cold winds, frigid temps, and ice that can develop at any given moment.
In order to stay safe in these colder months, there are steps you should take with your senior to make sure they stay safe and comfortable all winter long.
Four Important Areas to Review Before it Becomes Too Cold
Clothing
Even the warmer areas of the country can have temperatures that become quite chilly at night. Now is the time to make sure your loved one’s wardrobe is ready for the winter. Check coats, hats, boots, gloves, and other winter wear to make sure they’re all still in good condition and will protect her adequately this winter.
Vehicle
If your loved one is still driving, you should have her car reviewed for winter safety features before inclement weather hits. From simple things like making sure the wipers are working well to replacing tires with poor tread, taking these steps now will help her stay safe on the roads this winter. Don’t forget to get all of her fluids checked and make sure the heater is working well before those temps dip too much.
Home
Now is the time to be switching out bedding with warmer blankets, consider weather-proofing the windows, and making sure her heater is in good working condition. It’s also good to make sure she has a shovel she can manage, salt for sidewalks, and adequate outdoor lighting.
Help with Daily Activities
If your area is one where winter months bring ice, snow, and dangerously low temperatures, then making sure your elderly loved one has the help she needs in order to navigate the winter months safely is important. Seniors who continue to live in place in their homes often need the most assistance with home and yard upkeep, and transportation.
A senior home care team can be a great resource for your elderly loved one during the winter months. Senior home care providers can help provide transportation when your senior doesn’t feel comfortable driving on roads that are no longer clean and cleared off of built-up snow or slick with ice. One of the great benefits of having senior home care providers assist with transportation is that, unlike ride services or taxis, they don’t sit in their car waiting for your senior to try to walk across a sidewalk that may have snow or ice on it. A senior home care provider will make sure your loved one gets safely from door to door, and can even help once she’s inside her desired location.
Senior home care providers can also help with spreading salt on slick sidewalks or clearing snow out of a walking path. For larger jobs like snow blowing a driveway or shoveling the public sidewalk, neighbors or teens wanting to earn a few dollars can be a great resource.
Taking steps now to help your senior this winter will ensure she stays safe while enjoying the colder months of the year.

“My desire to enter into nursing started when one of my older sisters died of kidney disease due to lack of care. At age 15, I decided to enter into nursing so that I could provide quality care to patients.Upon arrival in United States at 21 years of age, I enrolled in T.C Willliams School of Practical Nursing while working as a nursing assistant at a nursing home. I also worked as a part-time home health aide to take of the elderly. After completion of my practical nurse education, I worked in geriatric psychiatry unit at Dominion Hospital and Arlington Correctional facility mental health unit.
I completed Marymount University in 2001 and entered into Home Care as a field case manager.
I held that position for 2 years and as an Administrator, and for another 2 years until Access Home Care was found in 2004."
